The sculptor represents the transition from one pose to another...In his work we still see a part of what was and we discover a part of what is to be. -Auguste Rodin

painting Throughout most of history, the purpose of creating sculpture has been to produce works of art that are as permanent as is possible. There is now a different mentality associated with sculpture. Many items are made or "remade" from discarded objects, like Bay Area artist Lexa Walsh. Some are more ephemeral, as can be seen in nature installations by artists like Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson. Still others are welded metal or carved marble, materials that will last ages. We present sculpture in a variety of materials- from the ephemeral to the indestructible.

Glass Slipper

J. SCHMIDT

Glass Slipper
2004, Oakland, California
Glycerin, 1.5" x 4"

The body takes on an ephemeral quality, the material is firm and smooth, and will wear over time. It takes on hurt from the surroundings, yet these can be easily washed away. The body glows from within.
